Mumpreneur Spotlight: South Hill Designs
Hi everyone! I’m Sarah Ridge and I’m a forty something mother of two from Leigh-on-sea in Essex! Firstly, I’d like to say thank you to Mumpreneur UK for allowing me to introduce you to my business, South Hill Designs.
I’ll be honest and say I’ve really struggled to find a job after having my children. I’ve tried to go back to ‘work’ twice and failed miserably – I’ve just not been able to get the balance right!
Then back in April last year I spotted an advertisement for South Hill Designs. They were in pre-launch over here having just come over from the US. I loved the look of the jewellery they sold – their ‘memory lockets’ were so different, I’d never seen anything like them before!
So after various emails backwards and forwards to America and several excited phone calls, I made the decision to join and I set up one of the first South Hill Designs businesses here in the UK.
It’s been the most fantastic year! I genuinely love my job as not only does it fit in perfectly around my family but I’m my own boss and I don’t have to answer to anyone!! Every day is different and I’m lucky to work with and meet ladies from all over the country and from all kinds of backgrounds.
So what can South Hill Designs offer you?! From a customer point of view we are much more than just ‘memory lockets’!! We stock a wide range of jewellery – everything from personalised necklaces to leather and crystal wrap bracelets. We also stock earrings and rings as well, to complete your look. From a business point of view, when you join South Hill you are completely in charge. Whilst also receiving the support and expertise that comes from a large established company.
My favourite part of my week is definitely my Socials! I take my jewellery round to lovely ladies’ houses, where they will have arranged a girl’s night in. I then help my hostess and her guests try everything on, whilst we all share the stories we are going to wear inside our lockets. They are very intimate and personal occasions and I look forward to every one.
But I also love getting on the road with my display too – I visit playgroups, pamper nights, fetes and fayres! I get to chat to ladies about our ranges, take orders, book Socials and also find potential new team members! It never feels like work and because these tend to take place during school hours and weekends, I don’t have to arrange childcare or ask relatives to ferry the kids to their various after school activities! More importantly I’m able to take them to school in the morning and be there to pick them up, help them with their homework and generally be a Mum when it’s needed!!
Life’s all about balance isn’t it?! And sometimes it can be so hard to figure things out! Working is very important to me, not only from a financial point of view but also because I want to show my children that Daddy isn’t the only one who can have a job! I love my role as a Mum but I’m also grateful that I’ve been given the opportunity to build a business up from scratch, that not only empowers me but hopefully many ladies both here in the UK and abroad.
